The small 4 hectare El Sapo farm in the Tarqui mountains belongs to Maria Berlinda Nuñez Trujillo and her family. When Berlinda’s husband inherited the farm in 1988, it was producing only beans and peas, but they had a dream of producing coffee. They were told the region doesn’t have the right climate for growing coffee, but they persisted, planted 1000 caturra trees, and now produce award-winning coffees. The farms in the area are accessible only by foot, and transportation of coffee from farms to the local washing station is done by mule or on foot. Berlinda has given land to all her children in hopes that the next generation of her family will follow her legacy in coffee production.
Former Fuglen Roastery Co-Founder and Cafe Manager, Joakim Hannibal, and Roastery Manager of Fuglen Tokyo, Kenji Kojima, visited Tarqui in 2018, joining the coffee competition hosted by Fairfield Trading, an export partner of Nordic Approach. That was the first year Berlinda competed, and her coffee took first place. During their visit, Fuglen was introduced to Berlinda and established a lasting relationship with Fairfield. Since then we have been working closely with both to secure consistent, quality-focused coffee for the Fuglen roasteries in both Oslo and Tokyo.
We bought the first lots of El Sapo two years ago, and now Fuglen buys this coffee directly from Fairfield Trading in Colombia.
