Flavour Profile: Strawberry, Dried Apricot, Cloves
Municipality/Area: Yirgacheffe, Gedeb
This certified organic coffee comes from the Yirgacheffe region in Ethiopia, considered by many to be the birthplace of coffee. The farms in the area are usually managed by small multigenerational families from more than 45 distinctly different tribes, or groups. The Chelchele washing station is operated by Metad, an organization founded by an Ethiopian business executive who returned to Ethiopia from working in fortune-500 companies abroad to support his community and his people. He was also the president of the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX), where he learned of the weaknesses in the Ethiopian coffee trade. Metad strives for complete transparency, in order to bring recognition to the quality coffees produced in Gedeb. The organization works with the farmers and communities to foster a healthy, sustainable relationship between people and coffee, reinvesting profits into community programs, health centers, schools, water treatment, recycling, and cross-crop pollination. The organization also assists novice farmers by giving them free seedlings, training, and professional assistance through every stage of production. Because of the elevated quality in production through these methods, the community has also been able to support infrastructure such as building roads and community centers.
