Flavours: Date, Cocoa Nibs, Apricot
Producer: Moises & Marysabel Caballero.
Farm: El Campo
This Honduran coffee, produced by Marysabel Caballeros and her husband Moises Herrera, came third in SCAA’s ‘Coffee of the Year’ competition in 2010. The lot was given to Marysabel by her father, and combined with Herrera’s family farms they own 200 hectares of land across 17 farms. This coffee is a Catuai variety but they also farm Java, Pacamara, and Geisha varietals.
Both Marysabel and Moises come from generations of coffee producers. Marysabel’s great-grandfather produced coffee in the Marcala region, the first area in Central America to become a ‘protected origin’ for coffee. The couple are constantly and tirelessly spending time and resources to improve the quality and sustainability of their farms and their coffees. They produce their own organic fertilizer, plant new varieties, and intersperse the trees with fruit trees and flowers to promote biodiversity and improve the environment for the coffee plants as well as the pickers. Everything they do on the farm is documented, in an effort to lift the quality of production in their region and Honduras as a whole.
We acquired this coffee through Nordic Approach, who have been working with the family since 2000, and began importing their coffee in 2012.
